Recoil Basics

The amount of recoil you feel to your shoulder depends on three factors: the weight of the bullet, the velocity of the round and the weight of your gun. Choose a load that fits the weather you'll be hunting in (thickness of clothing) and maximizes your chances of making an effective kill. Big magnum cartridges aren't for everyone.

Make sure you get to the range and try a few loads before taking to the field. Starting at the range will give you an idea of your tolerance for recoil. If you're flinching and not putting shots on target consistently, it's time to downsize, add a recoil pad or wear a thick jacket.
